About Me

Hi stranger, my name is Mel also known as Merikkuma. I’m a professional designer, an amateur food critic, and an artist with a bad habit of doubting herself every day. Welcome to my corner of the internet.

I’m currently working on unblocking my creativity. It seems like the unlimited stream of passion and imagination from which I enjoyed making art as a child has been blocked by a dam that controls its flow. I was left with a drip to work with on my own projects.

It sounds a tad dramatic, but as a designer I’m always using my creativity for others, with tight constrains and clear goals. Art on the other hand is so unconstrained; the white paper stops me in my tracks and I start wondering if I am up to the task of creating for me. No brief, no design system or return of investment to consider. Hello: art block. Sounds familiar?

I am very passionate about human connection through art, food and traveling. The more we interact and learn from people different from us the more united we become. Our socio-economic system does everything in its power to divide and steer us into consuming mindlessly. While in the past it left me feeling alone and defeated, now I want to reclaim my individuality and autonomy by expressing it through arts and crafts.

I have many hobbies but my most consistent one is reading. I love reading fiction and non-fiction alike. My favourite genres are Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Historical Fiction. My favourite books are The Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice, The Myth of Normal by Gabor Maté, among others. Feel free to send me a recommendation if you think I’m going to like it, you can see what I am currently reading on StoryGraph
