Last year I had a weekend trip to Tequila Jalisco with friends. We booked two tequila tastings, one at José Cuervo and one at La Herradura. But we weren’t there just to drink, we also had a cultural visit to the prehispanic archaeological site “Los Guachimontones“.

While on our hike to the top I started taking photos of the beautiful wild flowers and decided to paint them when we got back. These are some of the photos I took while we where there.

First draft

Before starting my sketch, I did a quick thumbnail in a piece of paper and mixed watercolors to create a color palette. While the pink flowers were orange on the photograph, it didn’t quite work with my idea. That is why they are pink. I wanted to include a lilac background but at the end I decided against it because I didn’t think I could pull it off. A clean solid wash on such a detailed subject is quite difficult. I’ll stick with the basics for now.
